Daniel Farke's contract at Leeds United could soon be a problem - here's why

Daniel Farke's contractual situation at Leeds United continues to rumble on.

The German's current deal at Elland Road comes to an end in June 2027.

There has been regular speculation this month that an agreement is close to being announced over an extension.

However, as yet, nothing official has been forthcoming from Leeds, while Farke has regularly deflected questions about an update.

It seems like all parties are aligned on the fact they want Farke, who is in his fourth season with Leeds, to stay put.

Beren Cross has now spoken about when it could become a problem if no official news is forthcoming.

When could Daniel Farke sign his new Leeds contract?

Leeds and Farke failed to reach an agreement on fresh terms during pre-season.

The situation was then put on the backburner as Leeds focused their energy on improving the squad during the transer window.

Leeds have started the season really well, taking nine points from five Premier League games to sit fifth in the Premier League.

There is now a three-week break for the international window, meaning Leeds theoretically have more time to focus on getting Farke's deal sorted.

The Athletic journalist Cross, speaking on the Square Ball podcast, thinks if nothing is agreed in that time then it could become a bigger story.

Cross said: "Across the international break it might be nice to see Farke get a new contract perhaps, would that be nice? Given that he's kind of kicked that can down the road, they've now got three weeks to work at it.

"Farke has spoken about it at press conferences in warm terms, Robbie Evans obviously spoke to the media in that Q&A in more than glowing terms.

"If all sides are saying they want it to happen and it doesn't happen over the next few weeks with five games played, and it does tick on into the winter, it's like 'what's the problem here? There's clearly something'.

"Coming into pre-season, I think externally it would have been nice to have it done before pre-season started but they obviously missed that target.

"You get into the meat of the window, you don't want to distract yourselves from the transfer window.

"Farke since the season started has said 'let's get to the international break'. So, if they get through this next sort of juncture and there still isn't anything done it does become a bigger story."

Clarity needed from Leeds United on Daniel Farke

Some sections of the fanbase have had their doubts over Farke, and a quiet minority probably still do.

But you cannot deny the progress Leeds have made under his stewardship, and he deserves an extension.

Cross is right, though, that if this continues to rumble on then it becomes an issue, not least because it causes a distraction that is entirely avoidable.

There needs to be some clarity one way or the other, but now feels like the perfect time to sit down and get the final details thrashed out.
