Willy Gnonto already attracting transfer interest, should be given new Leeds United deal – Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson would like to see Willy Gnonto handed a new Leeds United deal after being the Whites’ standout performer in the 2022/23 campaign.

The diminutive 19-year-old has scored four goals and registered one assist in the 2022/23 campaign and recently netted during Leeds’ 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

Robinson has claimed the Italian will already be attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and has urged the board to reward his performances with a new deal.

“He already is [attracting interest]. He’s been Leeds’ player of the season so far and he’s an exciting young talent they picked up for next to nothing when you compare it to other transfers which happened in the Premier League,” Robinson exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“Bargain of the season is an understatement. He’s been excellent, he’s been Leeds’ biggest goal threat, he’s not afraid to take players on, he’s direct and he’s got an eye for a goal.

“With Leeds hopefully being more defensively sound under Javi Gracia they can play on the break and use his pace and play on the counterattack.

“I have no doubt that even if they are in the Premier League, they will have potential suitors from all over Europe looking at him. I question why they aren’t looking to give him a new contract now.

“I understand the stipulations if Leeds are relegated it wouldn’t be the same but why not give him a new deal to warn off interest? He deserves one. He was bought for a minimal fee.

“I expect his contract to be middle of the road as far as Leeds’ salaries go but he’s one their best players so he should be financially rewarded like that. Act quickly and keep people away from him now.”

The 19-year-old is currently contracted to the Yorkshire side until the summer of 2027, so for now, Leeds are in a strong position when it comes to his future.

Gnonto started Leeds’ 1-0 win over Southampton but was substituted on the hour mark after failing to make a significant impact.

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
