Wilfried Gnonto parents move with him to UK after Leeds United deadline day transfer

Having signed for Leeds United on transfer deadline day, Wilfried Gnonto has brought his parents with him to start a new life in England.

The Italian international has already settled into the Whites’ squad in a short space of time but the daunting task of adjusting to a new country, having left FC Zurich in Switzerland, is a lot.

As a result, his mother and father have both joined him in Yorkshire where the trio now live together to help him settle even quicker off the pitch.

“I had other options, but since I spoke with Victor, I was clear that I wanted to come here in September or in January,” Gnonto told the Daily Mail. “Victor was just kind with me and, from the beginning, me and my family felt like he was part of the family.

“I was sure when I chose to come to Leeds and I did not regret it. For me, I think this was the best choice for me and for my family. It’s not easy because everything is different here. But I’m in Leeds with my parents, so they help me every day and I don’t feel alone.”

Extended family

While his parents are staying as close as they can to Gnonto, he already has a vast extended family at Thorp arch ready to help him whenever and however they can.

At just 18 years of age, it takes incredible bravery to simply leave a place where he is settled and jet out to another country where he has to almost start life all over again.

Admittedly, a Premier League wage makes things a lot easier but Switzerland and England are two extremely different cultures and it isn’t an easy adaptation for some people.

Fans can often forget that the player and the person are two different entities in a way and that if one is struggling, the other often takes a hit as well.

Jesse Marsch and Orta have both been tremendous in helping him make the transition as smooth as possible and that humility could well be a catalyst for more overseas wonders to choose Leeds over anyone else.

In other Leeds United news, this experienced campaigner was seen in conversation with Orta as his future at Elland Road hangs in the balance.
