Victor Orta wants to sign Villarreal ace Alfonso Pedraza as 'serious injury' emerges at Leeds United
Junior Firpo’s “serious” injury has forced Victor Orta to target Villarreal left-back and former Leeds United loanee Alfonso Pedraza, according to AS.
Football Espana reported (26 December) that Leeds were battling Inter Milan for their former loanee, who spent a year at Elland Road in 2017.
However, AS have since suggested (29 December) the “picture is changing” at Inter, with Robin Gosens playing his way back into contention at the San Siro.
It’s been suggested Pedraza is the “perfect fit” for Leeds and that Villarreal are open to selling the left-sided player should the right bid arrive. The 26-year-old is said to be among those analysed by Orta as he looks for a replacement for Firpo.
A left-back simply has to come through the door at Elland Road in the January window and Pedraza would be the ideal man to fill the current gap. He’s experienced Leeds before and has clearly developed immensely since returning to Villarreal.
Furthermore, at 26, he will certainly provide the Whites with a good few years of service before his performance level inevitably begins to decline. With Milan potentially stepping aside, it does seem like a golden chance for the Yorkshire side to ease their left-back woes.
Firpo is unfortunately not near the standard required to succeed in the Premier League and has also struggled badly with injury problems.
It would be refreshing to see Jesse Marsch get some of his business done early so he can fully focus on having a successful January on the pitch for Leeds.
The bottom of the Premier League is looking as congested as it’s ever been which means a couple of positive results can easily propel a side well clear of danger.
