‘Very strange’ – Paul Robinson baffled by big behind-scenes development at Leeds

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United

Paul Robinson has said the behind-scenes decision to start Kiko Casilla ahead of Illan Meslier for the final two games of the season was “very strange”.

Casilla played the last two games of the season in just three starts all campaign – Meslier was injured for the 1-0 defeat against Brighton earlier in the season.

Robinson said he thinks (and hopes) it was because Casilla will be moved on this summer.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “The decision to start Casilla was very strange.

“If I was Meslier I’d be very disappointed after the season he’s had. He’s grown into the role, his confidence and stature have grown.

“Casilla has done nothing to earn his right to play the last two games.

“When Casilla played in the FA Cup he was really poor and he didn’t earn his spot in the Premier League, although he played okay.

“I’d like to think it’s because he’s moving on and that Leeds are going to strengthen.

“But if I was Meslier I’d be really disappointed and from the fans’ point of view, Casilla has done nothing to deserve it.

“He’s only played one game at Elland Road with fans, the 2-0 win against Huddersfield before COVID hit This would have been his big opportunity in the Premier League and for fans to show their appreciation.

“I know it wasn’t full at the weekend but it still generates an incredible noise.”

Bielsa didn’t give a reason for his behind-the-scenes decision but there’s no hint that it’s anything to do with Meslier.

Most Leeds fans would like to see Casilla moved on and this could have been Bielsa putting him in the shop window.
