Unusual clause not possible in Germany used on Robin Koch, permanent Leeds United exit on cards

Leeds United loanee Robin Koch has an “unusual” relegation clause in his contract at the Elland Road club, according to Kicker.

The publication reported on its website on Sunday (22 October) that such clauses are not allowed in German football, where the defender is currently playing.

The 27-year-old is spending a season-long loan at Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, with his Leeds contract expiring next summer.

“A contract clause allowed him to move on loan after Leeds were relegated,” according to Kicker. “This is unusual because loan deals in the last year of the contract are not possible within Germany. But in England the clocks tick differently.

“At Eintracht, due to the statutes, Koch is only allowed to sign a new, long-term contract from January 1, 2024, i.e. six months before the end of the contract. Internally, the SGE assumes that this will happen.”

Moving on?

It seems highly likely that Whites loanee Koch will move on next summer, unless of course they can strike a deal before then.

The German seems very settled in his homeland, having endured a tricky time at Elland Road since his arrival from SC Freiburg.

The West Yorkshire club particularly suffered defensively last time out, with their issues at the back playing a major part in their demotion to the Championship.

Koch is one of many players who chose not to stick around at Elland Road following the relegation, and it is a decision that in all fairness has worked out for all parties so far.

The defender is having a great season in the Bundesliga, with Frankfurt running a tight ship at the back.
Koch was even handed the captain’s armband at his temporary club in their win against Hoffenheim on Saturday (21 October).

Leeds meanwhile have brought in Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham, with the Wales international partnering Pascal Struijk at the back more often than not, with the Whites currently third in the table.

In other Leeds United news, one Whites ace has sent a six-word message to a Liverpool star after injury news emerged at the Premier League club.
