Troy Deeney shares who could main man at Leeds United after what he saw

Troy Deeney has backed Dan James to establish himself as the “main man” at Leeds United this season.

The 27-year-old has been a regular for Daniel Farke having played every game he has been fit for after missing some game time due to a hamstring injury.

The winger was Man of the Match and scored in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough on 10 December, with the main goal promotion back to the Premier League.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [11 December: 16:56], Deeney tipped the Welshman for a strong season as he said: “He’s got an opportunity now to be the main man. Last year he was in and out.

“I worked the play-off game and he was excellent when he came on at half-time, changed the game into Leeds’ favour.

“Obviously didn’t end up winning but had a huge impact and I think with Summerville moving on now there’s the space for him to grow and he’s doing really well, Leeds are doing well so far.”

Dan James can make himself undroppable for Leeds United

Although he made plenty of appearances last season, as Deeney says, James was unable to cement his place on the teamsheet as a regular starter under Farke and at times had to settle for appearances off the bench.

Having an injury early in the season hasn’t been the most helpful thing for the 27-year-old but of late, he has found himself starting most of the Whites’ games and more importantly, he has had four goal contributions since his return from the sidelines.

Although the West Yorkshire outfit are continuing to pick up good results and currently occupy the top two spots in the Championship, Farke’s biggest issue has to be the lack of goals coming from the strikers in his side with the likes of Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph struggling to impress on a regular basis.

With that in mind, the Welsh winger has the chance to show his manager that he can be the difference here by carrying on to get those all-important goal contributions which will undoubtedly serve his side in their push for top-flight football.

If he can have a strong end to the season, that mirrors a success for his side on the pitch, the player could easily find himself starting in a Premier League side next season.

In other Leeds United news, this Whites regular could be tempted to leave Elland Road in January amid interest from a foreign club.
