Tony Dorigo impressed by Leeds United captain Liam Cooper

Tony Dorigo was impressed by Leeds United captain Liam Cooper during Scotland’s 2-0 win over Denmark on Monday.

Writing in his exclusive column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, the former Whites man discussed Cooper’s rise under Marcelo Bielsa and praised him for helping Scotland beat the Danes at Hampden.

Cooper set up the opening goal as he nodded a deep corner back across goal for John Souttar to direct into the net.

Dorigo said: “If you think where Cooper came from, coming to Leeds and struggling a little bit before establishing himself, becoming captain and leading the club to promotion, it is remarkable.

“He’s now playing on the biggest of stages internationally as well.

“The header at the back post across goal set up the first for Scotland against Denmark, and it was brilliant to see, for him.

“Maybe in an international week, Cooper wouldn’t be the top of the list when it came to wondering how Leeds players were getting on, but that was a great performance, especially against such a good side.”

Big praise for Cooper.

This was Cooper’s 13th appearance for Scotland, which is an impressive feat given that he was once deemed not good enough for the Championship [The Athletic].

However, under Bielsa, he has become a rock-solid and usually reliable Premier League centre-back who is also a key part of the dressing room.

It was great to see him help Scotland beat Denmark earlier in the week, in what was a very impressive and determined performance from the Tartan Army.

Dorigo is right to heap praise on Cooper because he has turned his career around and is now a regular starter in the Premier League and for his country.

His development has been pretty incredible, really, and it was great to see him helping Scotland over the international break.

Now, next up for Cooper is Tottenham Hotspur, which should be a tough game, but he can take a lot of confidence into that match, and hopefully, he finds a way to deal with Harry Kane.
