David Anderson: Leeds United's Victor Orta constantly updates transfer shortlist

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the club’s transfer shortlist, according to journalist David Anderson.

The Spaniard takes the lead on all transfer-related activity at Elland Road, identifying targets for Marcelo Bielsa and helping deals get over the line.

With just over six weeks to go until the January window opens, Orta will be busy preparing for any business that Leeds plan to do.

Writing in his latest column for the Mirror, Anderson states that the director of football is “constantly updating his list of targets” and has a knack for concluding last-minute transfers.

However, the report also admits that Orta is not a huge fan of the January market “because the pool of available players is so small and the asking prices so high”.

Perfect preparation

It is no surprise to hear of Orta’s thorough approach to transfer preparation, considering the success he has had at Elland Road.

His approach to recruitment, combined with Bielsa’s coaching and management, has helped transform Leeds in recent seasons.

However, he may need to get over his phobia of the January transfer window and get to work on some deals in the new year.

The Whites have struggled in the Premier League so far this season and currently sit just three points above the relegation zone.

Injuries to players such as Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling have exposed gaps in their squad and highlight the need for recruitment in January.

Meanwhile, if Liverpool target Raphinha decides to leave, attacking additions will certainly be needed in West Yorkshire.
