Leeds United hunt for Traore could be scuppered by new contract talks
Leeds United have been linked with a summer move for Wolves attacker Adama Traore this summer but that might be off now.
In April, Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles said, “I’m hearing it’s not just Pedro Neto who is being made available for sale – it’s also Ruben Neves and Adama Traore.” [Transfer Window podcast].
However, The Athletic have reported a big twist in the saga and it looks like Traore might be staying at Wolves.
It reported: “Traore’s contract expires in 2023 and The Athletic can reveal contract talks have moved from ‘deadlocked’ to ‘ongoing’.
“They had halted in November, with Traore believing the offer on the table didn’t reflect his worth to the team.
“There remains that difference of opinion, with Traore wanting to be one of the club’s highest earners and Wolves, who feel they’re in a strong negotiating position, unlikely to budge too much, but there is a desire from both parties to come to an agreement and they’re talking.
“Nuno has also been talking up Traore in recent press conferences.”
Traore won’t be a big miss for Leeds
Traore is a curious mix of a player.
When he’s on his best form he’s completely unstoppable and that’s not just down to the baby oil that he smears on his arms before playing.
His turn of speed is exceptional and he can look like one of the best players in the world when he’s got the ball at his feet.
However, he’s horribly inconsistent and we don’t think he’d be a player who would slot into a Bielsa side.
He would also command the sort of fee that would take up a sizeable chunk of our summer budget.
When you consider that we paid £17m for Raphinha and have an £11m option for Jack Harrison, we’re well covered on the wings.
We’ve also got Helder Costa, Ian Poveda and Crysencio Summerville there.
Given that, we wouldn’t be upset if Traore does sign a new contract. We think Bielsa and Victor Orta can bring in better.
