Swansea City want to sign Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt on loan in January
Swansea City are looking to sign Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt on loan in the January transfer window after struggling for regular first-team action this season, according to the Daily Mail.
The 20-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Jesse Marsch this term, featuring 14 times and only managing to record a single assist to his name.
Gelhardt broke onto the scene under his American boss last season, netting some crucial goals in the Whites’ relegation scrap, including a memorable injury-time winner against Norwich City.
But the Daily Mail report Leeds are willing to loan the youngster out this January as they look to accelerate his development away from Elland Road.
Journalist Simon Jones wrote: “Swansea City are keen to sign Leeds United’s striker Joe Gelhardt on loan amid the Liverpool-born 20-year-old’s struggles with the Premier League club this season.
“Swansea are now keen to take the forward on loan, with Leeds keen to maintain his development having seen flashes of brilliance from him last term.
“Gelhardt has been a victim of Rodrigo enjoying perhaps his best season in a Leeds shirt to date, with the Spaniard way out in front in their scoring charts with 11 in all competitions, including 10 in the Premier League.”
Deciding on the future of Gelhardt will be a tough choice for Leeds to make in the coming days.
On the one hand, the striker hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season and looks like a shadow of his former self. A move to the Championship could help the former Wigan player find his goalscoring boots and come back to Elland Road a more complete player.
However, Leeds lack natural centre-forwards in their squad, and with Patrick Bamford constantly sidelined, Gelhardt could still be an extremely important cog to Marsch’s works. If Rodrigo or Willy Gnonto were to fall foul to injury, the American would be left with little to no options.
The decision will likely hinge on the potential signing of Georgina Rutter. If Victor Orta manages to complete the signing of the French forward for the rumoured fee of around £26-35 million, Gelhardt will most likely be allowed to move to the Championship club. [Florian Plettenberg]
In other Leeds United news, the club is in advanced talks over another major signing, according to Fabrizio Romano.
