Stuart Pearce stunned by Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips after England display
Stuart Pearce has waxed lyrical about Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after he starred for England in their European Championships opener on Sunday afternoon.
Phillips started for his national team against Croatia, helping his side to a clean sheet and registering an assist for Raheem Sterling in their 1-0 win at Wembley.
Speaking on talkSPORT [14/06/21], ex-England international Pearce, currently a first-team coach at West Ham, hailed the Whites dynamo after his impressive display.
“His energy is incredible,” Pearce said.
“I watched him and Declan Rice play together in March and I thought will it work with the both of them because they’re perceived as playing a similar position.
“His energy and enthusiasm…he gets at people, his stats for not giving the ball away yesterday were quite incredible.”
Phillips was simply stunning on Sunday afternoon.
The 25-year-old was the subject of intense scrutiny by many pundits and fans heading into the game, with his abilities under question amid mounting pressure to drop him for Jude Bellingham or another attacking midfielder.
However, he shut a lot of his doubters up with his performance against Croatia.
He played in a more advanced role for England than he does for Leeds, evidenced in his position for the assist he laid on for Raheem Sterling in the second half, but he still showed his sensational abilities.
Phillips was comfortable in possession, aggressive in the tackle and a source of creativity for The Three Lions as they made the perfect start to their Euro 2020 campaign.
He showed just how effective he can be when given the license to go forwards, and he now looks a shoo-in to start England’s clash with Scotland on Friday evening.
We can’t wait for the Yorkshire Pirlo to show his talents on the biggest stage for weeks to come.
