Laura Woods pays glowing tribute to Leeds United star Kalvin Philllips
Laura Woods has admitted her shock at the progression of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after he starred for England on Sunday afternoon.
Phillips, 25, started for his national team in their European Championships opener against Croatia, registering an assist and helping to guide England to a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.
Speaking on talkSPORT [14/06/21], former Scotland striker Ally McCoist “agreed” that the Whites star was man of the match at Wembley, while journalist Woods detailed her surprise at his rise.
Woods said: “That’s just what I couldn’t get my head around, the rise he’s had in the last season or so where he’s been promoted, not just up to the Premier League but picked for his country.
“Southgate has so much faith in him and it doesn’t look at all like there’s any sort of pressure on his mind or that the occasion will get to him.”
Doing it on the big stage
Leeds United fans know all about Phillips, but it looks like the rest of England is starting to wake up to his star quality.
The Whites midfielder has been one of our most consistent performers since he made his debut in 2014, particularly after the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds.
El Loco has helped to transform him into one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League, and such form earned Phillips his international debut in 2020.
Now he’s transferred his Leeds form to Euro 2020, and the whole nation can appreciate his greatness.
He played a slightly different role to the one he adopts for the Whites, featuring further forwards, but he still had an important role in proceedings as The Three Lions edged past Croatia on Sunday.
We can’t wait to see Phillips continue to show Europe his sensational abilities.
