Leeds United are set to make a move for Middlesbrough defender Daniel Ayala whether they are promoted or not.
That’s come from the Daily Star who claim that Leeds are on the lookout for new defensive recruits with Brighton unwilling to sell Ben White.
The report also claims that Ayala is keen on playing under Marcelo Bielsa and will leave at the end of his contract regardless of whether Middlesbrough stay in the Championship or get relegated.
It’s not the first time that Leeds have been linked with the 29-year-old centre-back, who is out of contract in the summer.
The Northern Echo had previously reported that Leeds were set to make a bid to bring Ayala to Elland Road in January.
That report claimed that Middlesbrough wanted to convince Ayala to sign a new contract but the Daily Star now claims the player will leave the Riverside at the end of his contract.
And that will see Leeds director of football Victor Orta, said to be a fan of the player from his time at Middlesbrough, re-ignite the Leeds move.
Ayala – MOT View
Ayala comes with experience. He’s played in the Premier League for Liverpool, Norwich and Middlesbrough.
We’ve always thought that he would be a good back-up for Leeds if Gaetano Berardi leaves.
However, the priority for Leeds must be on keeping Ben White. That will involve getting into the Premier League and even then it could be tough, with sides like Liverpool monitoring the player.
The hope will be that he has settled at Leeds and likes playing under Marcelo Bielsa.
White is 22 and has a potentially huge future in front of him. Ayala is 29 and is a solid journeyman.
