Sky Sports pundit slams Wolves defender Jonny for red card v Leeds United

David Phillips believes that Wolves defender Jonny deserved his red card in the 4-2 Leeds United win v Wolves game on Saturday, 18 March.

He was initially given a yellow for his studs-up challenge on Luke Ayling and the referee was then asked to rightly have a look at it by VAR.

However, on looking at the replay, it was rightly turned to a red as it was serious foul play with him more than endangering his safety.

Phillips, a Sky Sports pundit, said on the Premier League world feed (18/03, 15:03), “That’s a nasty challenge. Oh no, that’s horrible. That’s got to be a red.”

Right decision

It was a surprise that it wasn’t given as a red initially as it looked like a nasty challenge and you could gauge it from the reaction of the Leeds players.

Tackles like these have no place in the game and there should be no protests against it as it’s a deserving red card.

That of course put the game beyond all doubt but Leeds still ensured that they put some daylight between them and their opponents through a Rodrigo goal.

Wolves away is always a tricky result and getting three points from that one is certainly priceless and something that will give Javi Gracia to build on.

He can go into the international break relieved that they won’t be in the bottom three and they have now jumped to 14th. The table is going to bring about its own set of twists and turns and going above Nottingham Forest and Leicester is huge.

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
