Sky Sports pundit: Leeds United could struggle to keep hold of goalkeeper Illan Meslier

Paul Robinson has suggested that Leeds United could struggle to keep hold of Illan Meslier as the Whites managed a 2-2 draw against West Ham on Wednesday (4 January) in the Premier League.

The BBC Sport pundit was full of praise for the French goalkeeper saying he has grown into stature and that he can see him playing in the Champions League in not too distant future.

The 22-year-old is enjoying a fantastic season at the club, and several clubs are reportedly vying for his signature.

“Another good season for Meslier. Excellent young goalkeeper,” said Robinson on Premier League world feed (38 mins).

“He was given an opportunity at a young age by Marcelo Bielsa. He has taken that opportunity and never looked back.

“He has grown in stature, grown in confidence. Meslier is having the best season I’ve seen. He’s grown, he’s developed in his decision-making, in his confidence, in his distribution, he’s looking like an all-round goalkeeper.

“If there’s anything the problem with Leeds are going to have is keeping hold of him in all honesty. He works very hard, very dedicated. I can see him playing Champions League in not too distant future.”

Interest

Meslier has been superb this season for the Whites and he produced another fantastic performance against the Hammers.

His meteoric rise has been noticed by top clubs across the world, and Leeds must brace themselves for potential bids for Meslier in the future.

Foot Mercato reported on 3 January that Chelsea have become the latest club to have registered an interest in the 22-year-old keeper.

Premier League nouveau riche Newcastle United and German giants Bayern Munich are also among the contenders to sign the French stopper.

Leeds have nothing to worry though. He has a contract at Elland Road until 2026, and the Whites are expected to demand a high transfer fee for him if any potential suitor come calling.

Meslier has the potential to play for Champions League football. He is not error-prone and maintains a high level of concentration.

Leeds play a very high-octane football where the defence sometimes looks all over the place which leaves Meslier exposed.

In other Leeds United news, the club have already made an approach to sign a player who could be the next arrival at Elland Road following Max Wober.
