Mason Holgate could be next on Leeds United shopping list after approach to Everton

Leeds United could turn their attention towards signing Everton defender Mason Holgate next after confirming the deal for Max Wober, according to The Sun (3 January).

The Whites confirmed the signature of Wober on Tuesday (3 January) but they could look to add more defenders to their ranks, and Holgate could be an option.

The Sun reported on 22 December that the Whites have made an enquiry about Holgate who has made over 120 appearances for the Toffees in the Premier League.

Strange

How many defenders do Leeds need? The defence remains a major worry, but Jesse Marsch surely now has got loads of options with him.

Marsch already has Liam Cooper, Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, and Pascal Struijk as four main centre-backs. Wober is primarily a central defender, but he is most likely to be used as a left-back.

Holgate has got loads of Premier League experience and he would be a smart addition for the Whites.

He has dropped down the pecking order at the Merseyside club, and has managed only four appearances this season, although he picked up a knee injury against Brentford towards the end of August that ruled him out for a while.

It will be interesting to see if Frank Lampard is really willing to offload Holgate this month. Michael Keane is almost certain to leave, and the Toffees could offload Yerry Mina as well. In that case, Lampard could be reluctant to sell Holgate who has a contract at Everton until 2025.

At 26, Holgate needs to play regularly, and it’s hard to see how Leeds can use him unless they are already planning a long-term replacement for Cooper.

In other Leeds United news, this star man has been ruled out of the clash v West Ham while another senior ace is still a doubt.
