Sky Sports pundit claims Leeds United star Illan Meslier should be at World Cup with France

Paul Robinson says Illan Meslier should be at the World Cup with France competing for the number one spot with Hugo Lloris, not at home with Leeds.

The young goalkeeper was overlooked in the goalkeeper department by Didier Deschamps despite Mike Maignan being out injured, with Steve Mandanda and Alphonse Areola called up instead.

But while appearing on Astro Sport (22 November) as a pundit before their opening World Cup clash with Australia, Robinson admitted that Lloris isn’t the goalkeeper he once was and feels Meslier would be challenging him to start at the tournament.

“I look at the two goalkeepers on bench Areola and Mandanda, he’s got no competition in that squad whatsoever,” he said.

“Those two goalkeepers are not good enough to challenge him.

“For me, Illan Meslier at Leeds should be in that squad. He’s good enough. Areola has hardly played this season. Meslier would come in, he would challenge Lloris as a number one I think.”

Robinson is an exclusive pundit of MOT Leeds News and a regular on Sky Sports, so he obviously knows what he’s talking about and he’s proved that again here.

Meslier has been excellent this season, despite the team’s struggling league position and he must have been bitterly disappointed not to get the call even when Maignan fell out with injury.

His reflexed are tremendous, his distribution is excellent and while he does have a bit of a weakness when it comes to catching crosses, that is also where Lloris struggles too.

It’s a positive for Leeds as it means he is rested and recharged ahead of the second half of the season, but for him it must be a setback knowing that he is so far down the pecking order at international level.

He is shining for the Under-21’s when he plays there though, and it could be that he’s the next one up once Lloris inevitably hangs up his international gloves after this tournament.
