Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier given France assurances after recent Under-21s absence

Leeds United decided to reject the Under-21s call up from France for goalkeeper Illan Meslier, ensuring that he does not go out on international duty in November.

According to Yorkshire Evening Post [10 November], the Frenchman has been given assurances that he will feature regularly in next summer’s UEFA European Under-21 Championships.

Despite not being included in the senior World Cup squad for Qatar 2022, the 22-year-old is highly thought of further up the chain of the French football association.

Senior call up soon?

It seems like the plan for Meslier is to go to the Under-21 Euros and do well there before he’s in the picture for Les Bleus senior side.

There’s a very a good chance that they look to change head coaches after the World Cup and the new one would certainly want to build a team for the future.

Meslier at 22 is already proving that he can perform at the highest level against the best of teams and his performance against Liverpool showcases that he’s the man for the big occasion.

He will be the number one for France’s Under-21s next summer and we will be keeping a close eye on that competition to see how he fares.

After that, we’ll be really surprised if Meslier continues to be snubbed by the head coach as there cannot be any more reasons left to leave him out.

For the next few weeks, we are delighted that he’ll get a much-needed break as he certainly deserves it after playing every league game since the start of the season.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites could now be looking to sign an award-winning Ligue 1 ace and bring him to Elland Road in January.
