Sky Sports' Graeme Souness slams Leeds defending in 4-1 loss v Arsenal

Graeme Souness was furious with Leeds United defending during Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal at Elland Road on Saturday.

The Whites shipped three goals in the first-half today (18 December), and while they pulled one back during the second-half, the visitors grabbed another one to secure a convincing victory.

Souness was not impressed with how Leeds fell apart at the back, and he blasted them while watching the game on Sky Sports.

He said (via their website): “For Martinelli’s second, (Cody) Drameh is running forward into Raphinha’s space and he doesn’t sense the danger. I don’t want to be unkind to him, but he must look over his shoulder and see (Gabriel) Martinelli.

“Leeds weren’t in total possession of the ball. Leeds play like they’re in the school playground. Leeds are an absolute shambles.

“The way they’ve been asked to play ain’t going to win you games in the Premier League.”

Poor defending

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have conceded 11 goals in just their last two Premier League games in 2021-22, and things could be worse with a trip to Liverpool next.

All of Arsenal goals were from individual mistakes from the Whites, and the visitors should have scored more.

They were sloppy at the back against Manchester City last time out, shipping seven goals, and nothing changed against Mikel Arteta’s side.

The North Londoners should have scored more than four were they clinical enough, and Jurgen Klopp’s men would not be this wasteful in front of goal.

Leeds have now leaked 36 goals in 18 league games so far this campaign, and that does not look good.

Their defending has been very woeful, and they have not been impressive going forward either, scoring just 18 times.

For every goal they have scored, they have let two in, and something needs to change during the second half of the campaign.

Bielsa has to bring in some quality additions in January if he wants to get something out of the campaign.

His side have suffered injuries on a weekly basis, and it does not look like they can catch a break.

In other Leeds United news, Whites chiefs recently jetted out of the UK for talks.
