‘Might get a majority’ – Simon Jordan delivers verdict on EFL meeting to end 19/20 season early
talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan has dismissed the significance on the Championship of a League 2 meeting with EFL chiefs to stop the season early.
However, he did say they “might get a majority among themselves” in the meeting today.
League 1 chiefs are set for their own meeting with the EFL later in the week, with financial concerns driving the narrative.
Talking on the White & Sawyer show (talkSPORT, Tuesday, 11am) Jordan said, “The meeting is incidental. They might get a majority among themselves but it’s not their gift to decide whether the football league as a whole is stopped. It’s just tub-thumping but I do understand their challenges.
“However, it’s not League 2’s gift to dictate to the rest of the EFL whether the fixtures get played or not. It’s just noise for noise sake.
“When you sign up for the rules, they’re the rules. Clubs will have to take the consequences.”
At the moment, the talk is only about finishing Leagues 1 and 2 early and potentially using the points-per-game model to decide positions.
However, that would set a precedent that could potentially be used to decide the Championship.
That’s what’s happened in Scotland after an SPFL resolution was passed to end all leagues from the Championship down on a points-per-game basis.
The resolution also gave the SPFL the power to enforce the same rules on the Premiership if they couldn’t finish the remaining fixtures in safety.
We have consistently said that we want to see Leeds win promotion on the pitch.
However, ending it on points-per-game would be the second-best option and would see Leeds United promoted as champions.
Voiding the season is the one thing that can’t happen, for the integrity of the competition and for the future of clubs like Leeds and West Brom.
