Nigel Martyn has claimed that Leeds United will be looking to stay in-and-around the European qualification spots in the Premier League.
The Whites are currently sitting sixth in the table after three wins from their opening six games since promotion.
Compare that to fellow promoted sides Fulham and West Brom, who have only managed four points in 12 games between them.
Martyn claims that mid-table would be “tremendous” but that his former side should be aiming higher after the start they have made.
“When you get off to a bad start and there are few points on the board, you know what your season is going to be in for – look at the other promoted teams, they are not doing as well, he told TBR Football.
“If you start well, you stay there. Leeds have started that way, if I’m being honest, finishing mid-table would be a tremendous first season. Secretly, they will be looking to push higher than that and the way they play the game, I think they should.”
Survival is only goal
We are all delighted with the start Leeds have made to the season, but if we were offered 17th place and survival right now, we would most likely take it.
It is easy to get carried away with success, and the defeat against Wolves was a reality check that many potentially needed last week.
The bounce back in the 3-0 win against Villa was superb and proved that Leeds can compete easily with some of the best in the division.
One fan claimed after that, that Leeds could even win the Premier League, one step too far and possibly just the adrenaline speaking after such a great win.
This season appears to be a free-hit for many, and who knows how far we can go? European football wasn’t expected, but it could certainly become a realistic aim with more positive results.
