Sam Matterface: Leeds United could move for Patrick Vieira as new manager if things don't go to plan

Leeds could make a move to hire Patrick Vieira as their new manager if things don’t go to plan after he was sacked by Crystal Palace, according to Sam Matterface.

The Whites sacked Jesse Marsch in February and eventually settled on hiring Javi Gracia until the end of the season when they failed to bring in a number of their initial targets to replace him.

Vieira was sacked at Selhurst Park after a run of 13 games without a win left Palace in a relegation battle, but Matterface told talkSPORT (20 March, 10:30am) that Leeds were interested in Vieira when they sacked the American and they could look to bring him in now that he is available.

“Leeds were interested in appointing Patrick Vieira when they sacked Jesse Marsch and if things don’t go to plan at Leeds, don’t be surprised if they go after him again,” he said.

Spanner in the works

It was obvious that Leeds had an image in their mind of the type of manager they wanted to bring in when they sacked Marsch, simply based off the targets they had.

All of Arne Slot, Alfred Schreuder and Andoni Iraola were managers who play attacking football and like possession of the ball, and Vieira is someone who would also define his philosophy in a similar way.

Gracia hasn’t ripped up any trees since coming into Elland Road, but the win over Wolves was a very good performance and a huge three points to help us towards our target of safety and another season in the top flight.

If the Spaniard is able to keep us in the division, then it seems highly unlikely that we would let him leave in the summer having already agreed an option for him to continue should that happen, but if we were relegated it would be interesting if Vieira would be interested in dropping down a division with us.

There’s no doubt it would be an interesting appointment and a change of style, and fans will probably be split on it if it happens, but it’s certainly one to keep an eye on.
