Richard Keys stunned by VAR controversy in Leeds United 4-2 win v Wolves

Richard Keys was stunned by referee Michael Salisbury’s decision not to award Wolves a penalty for a foul by Junior Firpo in Leeds 4-2 win on Saturday.

The Whites took maximum points thanks to goals from Jack Harrison, Luke Ayling, Rasmus Kristensen and Rodrigo at Molineux, but the victory didn’t come without controversy.

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui was furious that a penalty wasn’t given in the first half when Firpo seemed to kick Nelson Semedo instead of the ball in the box, and Keys wrote in his weekly blog (20 March) that it was “clear and obvious” that it should have been given as a foul and penalty.

“Wolves have every right to feel aggrieved about the decisions that have been going against them,” he wrote.

“Of course they should’ve had a pen when they were only one-down to Leeds on Saturday. If they get the pen and score it’s a very different game.

“Junior Firpo caught Nelson Semedo in the box. Michael Salisbury didn’t think so and David Coote sat on his hands in the VAR bunker.

“Why? It was clear and obvious to everybody watching – except that pair.”

About time

VAR has been inconsistent at the best of times this season for everyone in the Premier League, and finally it seems to have gone in our favour for once.

Had the decision been the other way around, there is no doubt that Whites fans would have been furious that it wasn’t given, so the anger from Wolves is understandable.

At some point in the near future the FA and Premier League really need to have a look at how VAR works and the implementation of it, because the whole reason it was brought in was to take controversy out of the game.

Yet every week we end up talking more about decisions than we ever used to, because the technology is there to prevent it and yet it still isn’t stopping the issues that we’re seeing.

Ultimately we got the win we deserved in the game and this doesn’t concern us on this occasion, but with it being so tight at the bottom of the table if this happened to us we’d be in big trouble so it has to be corrected.
