Robyn Cowen reacts to Patrick Bamford miss in Brentford v Leeds United

BBC Match of Day commentator Robyn Cowen was left stunned after Patrick Bamford missed a sitter in the second half as Leeds United lost 5-2 against Brentford on Saturday (3 September) in the Premier League.

Leeds were 3-1 at that time, and Bamford got a glorious opportunity to pull one back. All he needed to do was to guide the ball into the open net, but his sliding effort saw him making a sort of clearance instead.

Marc Roca also attempted to score on the rebound, but it was saved. He did score moments later to make it 3-2.

“Bamford made a clearance. It’s incredible. That is unbelievable. How on earth it has stayed out,” said Cowen while commentating on the game on Saturday for BBC Sport.

Crazy game

The scoreline doesn’t look good, but it is not a true reflection of the game.

Till the 80th minute, the game was evenly poised. Leeds managed to make it 3-2 and they were pushing for a late equaliser.

However, a combination of poor VAR decisions and poor defending from the visitors allowed Brentford to add more misery in the end.

This is something Jesse Marsch needs to address quickly.

One of the major problems Leeds had under Marcelo Bielsa was that they were poor defensively.

There were decisions that went against them, and Ivan Toney was magnificent on the day, but the defence should have stayed resolute. That is not an excuse.

Diego Llorente is a brilliant defender but his mistakes are growing every day. These are basic errors that you shouldn’t make at this level.

Had Leeds managed to keep it 3-2 at least till 88th minute, they could have made a big push for a late equaliser.

However, they conceded the goal right after Roca had pulled one back, although the decision from the VAR left everyone baffled.
