Leeds United have told PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo that they will see him again in the winter window after missing out yesterday, according to Rik Elfrink.

The Eindhovens Dagblad journalist has reported that the Whites were left surprised that the deal didn't go through after agreeing personal terms with the winger.

It was a shocking day all round for Leeds and Andrea Radrizzani, with moves for Gakpo, Bamba Dieng and Hwang Hee-Chan all failing in last-gasp efforts.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Elfrink shared what left the Whites baffled as the deadline slammed shut late on Thursday (01 September) evening.

"Leeds United indeed want to try to get Gakpo in the winter break, confirmed from England," he wrote.

"Club surprises after personal agreement. We'll see you again in January. Here at De Herdgang, Gakpo said today that he will remain with PSV for the time being and will not make a transfer now."

See you again.

So then, we're going to have to wait until January.

Let's hope that it isn't too late with the PSV Eindhoven star a huge name and someone who could easily have his pick of all clubs moving forward.

Leeds have been in this place before and have seen moves not go through only to see that player move on to someone else months later, so our lack of urgency in the past 24 hours has been a real concern.

If we are still in and around the top half in the Premier League come January, and then we pull this move off, it could be seen as a masterclass by everyone involved.

Having said that though, if we are battling relegation again and then miss out on Gakpo, it's seen as a shocking move and something that could have made all the difference.

Things can go either end of the scale dramatically quick in football, we all know that, so Andrea Radrizzani will be biting his nails waiting to see what position he is in come this time in three months.

We hope we do see you then, Cody.
