Roberto Martinez showers praise on Leeds’ Pascal Struijk
Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk has attracted more praise from Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, who says he doesn’t currently have a player like him in his squad.
The former Everton boss has spoken with Struijk about the possibility of him representing Belgium and is now putting out the overtures to convince him to switch.
The 21-year-old was born in Belgium but could also play for the Netherlands, as he has dual citizenship – he also represented Netherlands under 17s.
“I was very impressed with his performance when he started playing for Leeds in the Championship,” said Martinez, as quoted by RTBF.
“We have to look to the future, but we don’t have that kind of profile. A left-handed central defender.
“He’s a dynamic player, very present and who can play in different positions.
“I like his character.”
Big potential
It is great to see Struijk getting the recognition he deserves.
And for it to come from such a well-respected figure makes it even more impressive – Martinez has a win percentage of 78% as Belgium manager.
He also finished third with the national team at the last World Cup.
And if he considers Struijk good enough to play in such a team then that says a lot about the versatile youngster.
We are not sure if he is quite ready for the international stage or the Euros this summer but he has certainly done well this year.
He did not play much of a role in our promotion but we have relied on him in recent weeks.
Struijk does not make up for Kalvin Phillips’ absence but he has been resolute when paired with Liam Cooper at the back.
He has managed two tackles and two interceptions per game (WhoScored) – only Phillips and Cooper have achieved a better record.
If he continues to improve under Marcelo Bielsa he may become a permanent fixture in our side, and maybe then he will get his international call-up.
