Gaetano Berardi finally made his return to action on Monday afternoon as he started for Leeds United Under 23s in their 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace.
We’ve been waiting to see the return of Berardi all season and after Monday’s outing, it seems as though he may be ready for a return to first-team action in the not too distant future.
The Swiss defender made it through the first 45 minutes unscathed before he was removed at half time but he still had time to prove the Berardi of old was still there.
Leeds Live‘s coverage of the game included this piece of commentary from just before half time and we absolutely love it.
“Gaetano Berardi volleys the ball and man inside the area, which gives rise to some loud Palace claims.
“Referee says nothing doing, but may have got away with one there.”
If there were any doubts about Berardi taking it slow or not quite being up to speed, this bit of action proved that we have nothing to worry about.
Berardi has always been somewhat of a loose cannon and frankly, that is one of the key reasons he is loved at Elland Road.
It is so good to see him back playing football, even if it is for our development side and him just playing a quiet 45 minutes would’ve been an incredibly positive boost.
But to hear about him getting up to his old tricks and kicking lumps out of Palace’s youth side is vintage Berardi.
We are counting down the days until we can see him handed a well earned Premier League debut after such a long spell on the sidelines.
A well-timed but heavy Berardi tackle in front of a packed Elland Road would be as good as a goal and we really hope he is handed the opportunity to do just that when fans are finally allowed back.
