Report: Leeds contact PL side over £50k/wk int'l midfielder, seven-figure sum will get it done

Leeds United are being linked with a move for Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, according to 90min.com.

They claim that Leeds have joined a quarter of Premier League clubs interested in a deal for the ROI international, with Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa making up the numbers.

The report claims all four clubs have spoken to Palace, who want to get most of the £8m back they paid for him.

McCarthy is under contract until 2022 and is on a reported £50k-a-week at Palace.

Experience – but not Leeds

Leeds are looking at the best of the Championship as they come back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

Exciting players such as Ollie Watkins, Said Benrahma and Eberechi Eze have been linked by The Atheltic’s Phil Hay.

We think that Leeds are looking for a goalkeeper (a senior one if Kiko Casilla leaves), a striker, more attacking support, maybe two centre-backs and a left-sided defender.

We’re not really sure where McCarthy fits into this and at 29 the only thing he would bring to the party is experience.

He’s got 40 caps for ROI and has spent 11 of the last 12 seasons in the Premier League.

However, given Leeds’ troubles with injured players (Izzie Brown and Jean-Kevin Augustin), we can’t see them taking a risk on McCarthy.

He played 33 top-flight games this season but only 17 total in the three previous campaigns.

We think we can file this under “not going to happen”.
