Reliable journo details what happens if numerous players test COVID-19 positive upon restart
Leeds United resume their bid to win promotion on Sunday with a lengthy trip to South Wales to play Cardiff City in a behind-closed-doors fixture.
Leeds are top of the Championship and have more to lose than any other club if numerous players test positive for coronavirus once the season is back underway.
One fan has asked what happens to teams that have a number of players receive positive test results and Sun journalist Alan Nixon has said that it is basically tough luck.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, the newspaper journalist said: “It’s the responsibility of the clubs to keep their people right. If they don’t then they just have to suck it up and play on. Until it gets to a set and pretty large number who are missing.”
It is hardly the most reassuring answer.
Leeds have already been reported to have had at least one positive test result and if a number of first-team players end up testing positive in the coming days, they’ll be forced to miss the game against Cardiff.
What happens if there’s a major outbreak at one club remains to be seen and Nixon doesn’t seem too sure what would happen if that was the case.
But you would imagine the EFL wouldn’t want to postpone any matches because the fixture list is already congested enough as it is.
Leeds have their own coronavirus testing machine at Thorp Arch and hopefully that will help them to avoid a big number of cases at the club.
However, there’s always the possibility of that happening at another club who Leeds play against.
So far, the low number of positive tests and the Bundesliga resumption are reassuring but no one can be too careful.
