Reliable journalist details ‘non-negotiable’ EFL position as PL plots ‘Mega’ 19/20 solution
Independent journalist Miguel Delaney has said that the EFL’s “non-negotiable position” is to finish the season “no matter what” – which is exactly what Leeds United want.
This comes after his report that the Premier League is plotting a radical plan that would see players staying in quarantined World Cup-style camps to finish the season, with 92 games being broadcast in a “TV mega event”.
One fan asked, “Well Miguel how are they intending to finish the other leagues? To me if you finish one you have to finish them all. You’ll have clubs in relegation places not being relegated picking up money that should have gone to clubs that would have been promoted You must finish all.”
Delaney replied saying, “Finishing the season no matter what is the EFL’s non-negotiable position.”
The Premier League seems to be scrambling for solutions to the 19/20 season at the moment and we should know more concrete details after their next meeting on Friday.
They have a financial imperative to finish the season by mid-July, according to the Mail, with a bill of up to £762m if they don’t.
That’s not just a problem for them though.
The EFL is taking a hardline approach themselves and it’s impossible to envisage a situation where the Premier League finishes and starts the 20/21 campaign if other leagues are still playing.
The EFL and Premier League might be different bodies but the leagues are inextricably linked.
It’s possible the Premier League could play out and the EFL is decided on points per game but one way or another, resolution that includes relegation and promotion must be reached.
