Leeds United have completed their third summer signing, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

He claims that Wigan striker Joe Gelhardt has joined the club after signing a four-year deal at Elland Road.

He said the deal had been completed earlier on Monday but there’s been no official confirmation from the club yet.

The Sun’s transfer expert Alan Nixon, who has broken parts of this story over the past couple of weeks, was a bit more circumspect this evening, saying that Gelhardt was “signing”.

Either way, it looks like the deal is all but done and there are some Leeds fans who are expecting an announcement tonight.

If confirmed, Gelhardt will become the third summer signing for Leeds after Helder Costa and Illan Meslier penned permanent deals.

Gelhardt – the new Rooney

Gelhardt has been dubbed the next Wayne Rooney and there is a sense that Leeds have landed a real deal at around £1m for the young striker.

Mirror journalist David Anderson has said this could rise to £2.5m with add-ons. This would involve Gelhardt going onto be a success at Leeds, which would make his fee an absolute bargain.

Leeds gain is definitely Wigan’s loss, though, with administrators setting the prices for departing players, with the club facing life in league One.

We’ve got plenty of sympathy for Wigan and its fans but one thing we can promise is that Gelhardt is heading to a proper home.

If there’s one club that can realise his true potential it’s Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa and his success at Elland Road will see more money going to Wigan

That won’t be much consolation to them at the moment, as they watch their best players being sold off.
