We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that while Robin Koch is a “really great signing” for Leeds, the Whites need to sign another centre-back and a holding midfielder this summer.
Koch signed from Freiburg for £13m after Leeds had to admit defeat in their bid to bring Ben White back from Brighton either on another loan or a permanent deal.
Athletic journalist Phil Hay had said that Marcelo Bielsa only wanted one centre-back despite losing White and Gaetano Bertardi (to injury) but recently reported that the situation seemed to be changing.
Hay mentioned Man Utd’s Axel Tuanzebe as a player that Leeds could look to bring in.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “I don’t think Koch is a replacement for Ben White and I’d like to think the club is going to carry on trying to sign him in the future.
“The bottom line is that Leeds need two centre-backs. Berardi is injured and out of contract. White’s signed a new contract with Brighton so that’s looking really unlikely this summer.
“Koch has always been on the radar as a potential signing. He’s a top player, without a shadow of a doubt, a really great signing for Leeds United.
“If they could have got White as well it would have been a really successful window but they need to sign another centre-back if they can’t get him.
“I think they need another centre-back and a holding midfielder. If Kalvin Phillips is injured then Leeds have a major problem without the cover that White gave them.”
Leeds have had to give up on White this window but there’s still hope among fans that a deal could be resurrected in the future – especially if Brighton get relegated.
Meanwhile, it does look as if Leeds want to bring another centre-back in and that could mean less playing time for Pascal Struijk, who made a bid for the first-team at the end of last season.
