Reading boss admits John Swift could leave amid Leeds United interest
Reading manager Veljko Paunovic has suggested that reported Leeds United target John Swift could leave in January.
Earlier this month, Football League World claimed that Reading are confident of keeping the player with them amid interest from Leeds.
Swift is the club’s top scorer and creator, and while Paunovic wants him to stay, he can guarantee that the player will still be at the club come February.
“He is under contract and he is our player,” Paunovic said, as quoted by Reading Chronicle.
“We are in the transfer market, it’s open, so if an offer comes it will always be considered. We don’t want to lose him but this is also football and the club is in the situation that is – it has to consider everything.”
The 26-year-old has been their best player and he has a juicy contract at the Championship club as well.
Leeds are keen to bolster their midfielder in January with Kalvin Phillips unlikely to return before March. The Whites have shown reported interest in signing RB Salzburg midfielder Brenden Aaronson, but it seems they have failed in their approach to land him this month.
In such a scenario, a late move for Swift can’t be possibly ruled out.
The report claims that a host of Premier League and Championship clubs are vying for his signature but the club don’t expect any firm offer for him.
The player himself is hoping to stay at the club and see his options in the summer.
The central midfielder has scored eight goals and provided 11 assists in the Championship this season.
It remains to be seen if Leeds make any formal move for him, mainly as a plan B option.
