Pundit: Tyler Adams only made one mistake in World Cup, Leeds United star will hate watching it back

Clint Dempsey sympathised with Tyler Adams after the Leeds United star made his only mistake of the World Cup against The Netherlands on Saturday.

Adams had been a standout performer in Qatar for the USA, but their tournament came to an end on Saturday after a 3-1 defeat to The Netherlands.

The 23-year-old made up a magnificent USA midfield including Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah, but the trio were torn apart by a wonderful Dutch move for Memphis Depay’s opener.

All three were caught out of position by a number of quick one-touch passes, and former USMNT star Dempsey labelled it Adams’ only mistake of the entire tournament.

“Tyler Adams is going to hate watching this back,” Dempsey told FOX Sports (3 December), as quoted by Leeds Live.

“Memphis just beats him to the spot. Not fun to watch. It’s unfortunate for Tyler, the one mistake he’s made this entire tournament and he’s got punished for it.”

Captain America

Despite bowing out of the tournament in the last 16, USA and Adams in particular have so much to be proud of. They entered the knockout stages as the tournament’s youngest team remaining and put on an excellent show against an experienced Dutch side.

Adams was superb for the USA throughout the whole tournament, playing every single minute for his country while proudly wearing the armband given to him after he was nominated captain by his teammates.

He had just one lapse of concentration in the tournament which resulted in a goal, but USA qualifying from Group B in the first place was largely down to Adams and the American midfield.

Jesse Marsch will be delighted to have him heading for Elland Road fit and healthy. He deserves a big holiday after a hectic first half of the season, but he’s shown in Qatar that he can be a key player for the Whites when the Premier League returns.

As for the USA, they can turn their attention towards 2026 where they’ll play host to the tournament alongside Mexico and Canada.

No doubt Adams will still be at the forefront of the USA team – likely still wearing the armband.
