Paul Merson has admitted that Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has proved him wrong so far this season.
The Elland Road hitman has hit two goals in his first two goals of the current Premier League campaign, as well as winning a penalty against Fulham last week.
And Merson has admitted that he might have judged the 27-year-old a little too early.
Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, September 26th, 13.00), he said: “He’s proved me wrong so far if I’m being honest.
“I didn’t see it. He’s putting himself in the box. He’s winning penalties.
“Leeds have only had seven shots on goal and they’ve scored seven goals, which is phenomenal going.
“One of his goals was a great goal, it was [Thierry] Henry-like. He’s been outstanding. He’s done every thing right so far. Can he do that for the rest of the season? Only time will tell.”
To be fair to Merson, he’s been far from the only detractor that Patrick Bamford has had in recent times.
We all know how hard he works for the Whites, as well as the physical presence that he offers Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but when it comes to his finishing, he often leaves a lot to be desired.
Last season, his shot accuracy was just 38.9%, compared to the 66.7% he has posted so far this term, as per Wyscout.
Likewise, his goals per game ratio was a full 0.24 lower than his xG, meaning he should have had around an extra goal for every four games he played.
Prior to this term, Bamford has scored just one goal in 27 top flight outings, and with such a paltry record, it’s easy to see why there were doubts over his ability to cut it at the highest level.
Full credit to him, however, he has taken to this new level like a duck to water, and long may it continue.
