Pontus Jansson praises Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa after play-off glory
Pontus Jansson reserved special praise for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United after he helped Brentford to victory in the Championship play-off final on Saturday.
Brentford emerged 2-0 winners over Swansea City after their huge clash at Wembley, earning the Bees promotion to the Premier League, where they will face Leeds next season.
Speaking to Sky Sports [17:00, 29/05/21] after the match, ex-Whites defender Jansson thanked El Loco for the part he had to play in the success.
“I’m so thankful to Bielsa and what he gave me at Leeds, he gave me so much knowledge that I actually brought into here at Brentford and they were so willing to listen to me,” he said.
“I thank him a lot, he is one of the best coaches in the world.
“People think mine and his relationship is not the best but it is, it’s very good.
“Of course I owe Brentford so much but I have to say thank you to Bielsa and to Leeds.”
Praise for the master
Bielsa was undoubtedly one of the Premier League managers of the season, but maybe he should be getting more credit for inspiring another side to Championship success.
Jansson left for London in 2019 and seems to have taken words of wisdom from his old manager with him.
It says it all about Bielsa that his methods have been taken to other clubs and used as a way to improve them.
He is one of the most highly-regarded managers in the world and it seems others are trying to soak up as much knowledge from him as they can.
Brentford appear to have profited from this, and we can look forward to another couple of encounters with them next season.
That will see an Elland Road reunion for Jansson who was an absolute colossus for us at times, but ultimately divided opinion towards the end.
But it’s great to hear him speak so warmly of the club and Bielsa after such a big win for his current side.
