PL boss' comments could explain why Roberts was sent back to Leeds by Wales

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce has shed light on why three Wales players, including Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts, were sent home from international duty.

Roberts, Hal Robson-Kanu and Rabbi Matondo were all sent home from the Wales camp earlier this week for ‘breaking protocol’.

Interim Wales boss Robert Page is quoted by the BBC’s Adam Pope as saying that he would not be commenting on the exact reason the players were sent home.

However, Albion boss Allardyce has commented on why his player was forced to leave the Wales camp which sheds light on why Roberts was too.

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone quotes Allardyce as saying, “Hal is OK. He slightly broke what you should be doing by meeting someone you shouldn’t. Negative test and back in training today.”

So it seems as though the players were meeting someone outside of the team bubble which is never a good idea in the current climate.

The Athletic claimed that there were no COVID issues on the day the news broke which is why some were confused as to why the players were sent home.

Surely if the three players left the team bubble to meet someone then they are a COVID risk and that’s why they were sent home?

Unless the actual act of leaving the team hotel, for example, was the ‘breaking protocol’ and the fact that they could’ve picked up COVID is just an added bonus.

That report also makes it pretty clear that all three players were together which means Roberts could’ve been part of meeting up with this mystery individual.

Either way, Roberts broke team rules and was rightfully sent home though it remains to be seen if Marcelo Bielsa will decide to punish his player.

Why Page felt it necessary to withhold this information we don’t know as it doesn’t seem like an offence that would put anyone in a particularly bad light.

We are yet to hear from Roberts in the days following the incident so maybe he will explain exactly what happened at some point.
