Phil Hay would be surprised if Leeds United don’t make at least one January signing

Phil Hay has insisted that he would be surprised if Leeds United don’t make at least one new signing in the January transfer window.

Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t usually like to bring players in during the winter month, but an injury crisis at Elland Road looks to have changed his mind.

Hay has previously shared that a new midfielder looks to be the priority, although many have also asked for another striker.

Writing in his Transfer Mailbag for The Athletic, Hay shared how many he expects through the door at Elland Road.

“There is a huge amount at stake, although we should be wary of forgetting that Leeds are not in the position Sheffield United were in last season,” he wrote.

“It might be that the club have the legs to stay up regardless of any January business they conclude.

“It was so hard getting promoted and a backwards step could be incredibly damaging to the club’s development. In light of the injury to Phillips in particular, I’d be very surprised if we don’t see at least one addition next month.”

It is brilliant to see that some new faces could arrive next month, but bringing in only one new signing could be a mistake.

A midfielder is a clear priority given the long-term absence of Kalvin Phillips and how important he is to this team.

On top of that, the Whites have struggled to find another out-and-out striker behind Patrick Bamford, who can’t seem to find his own fitness.

Two new faces could be the boost that everyone needs at the club, and it is down to Victor Orta to go out and find that.

The Spaniard has tasted little-to-no success in January during his time at the club, but our Premier League status could be relying on him getting it right this time.
