Phil Hay shares how much Leeds United will pay in bonuses if they avoid relegation

Phil Hay claims that Leeds United will pay £48million in bonuses if they avoid relegation in the 2022/23 league campaign.

The Whites paid £35million last season when they managed to stay up as they finished ninth in the Premier League.

It’s understood that they’re in good shape in terms of a business model after they announced an operating profit of £5million on Thursday (April 7).

In his Athletic piece, Hay wrote, “The importance of avoiding relegation, meanwhile, is shown by Leeds committing to bonuses of £35million in return for survival last season.

“A total of £48million will be paid in bonuses if they stay up again for 2022-23, though the club are understood to have included relegation provisions in the contracts held by many of their prominent players.

“Financially, they look like a business in good health, albeit with pressure on them to spend before next season begins.”

Relegation provisions

The entire model of Leeds is sustainable as long as they are in the Premier League.

They registered heavy losses in Marcelo Bielsa’s first season at the club and knew that failure to get promotion would see it happening again.

However, that did not happen as the Argentine guided Leeds to their promised land.

Now, even after what seems will be two full seasons in the Premier League, they are heavily reliant on the revenues that are achieved from being in it.

Hopefully, next season, they do better under Jesse Marsch but it’s really important that he’s backed in the transfer window.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are leading the race to complete a major signing and have already opened talks to seal a £25m deal.
