Phil Hay: Rodrigo now part of Marsch’s leadership council at Leeds United

Leeds United attacker Rodrigo has now been added to Jesse Marsch’s ‘leadership council’, according to Phil Hay.

Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas and Adam Forshaw were part of it under Marcelo Bielsa and Marsch decided to make Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips also join the fold.

Due to the lack of foreign representation, he decided to rope in Rodrigo, who is an established Spain international.

Hay wrote, “Cooper, the club’s captain, was a member of it, along with others including Luke Ayling, Stuart Dallas and Adam Forshaw. It was seen as a way of keeping lines of communication between the dressing room and senior management open.

“Just a short time at the training ground told him that Bamford and Kalvin Phillips should be involved too — Marsch talked at his first press conference about giving Phillips a bigger role within the team — and he decided that the absence of foreign representation from a fairly cosmopolitan group was something he should rectify. Rodrigo was brought into the fold as an extra voice.”

Good move

Rodrigo has struggled to adapt to life at Leeds since his move in the summer of 2020.

Joining as the club record signing, there was onus on the Spaniard to deliver, but unfortunately, he failed to hit the ground running.

Bielsa’s trust in Bamford saw Rodrigo play second fiddle to the Englishman from the outset.

Even when Rodrigo was played, it was either in a midfield role or in a slightly withdrawn second striker position.

He had a decent game against Norwich but an abject one against Aston Villa so there certainly is the lack of consistency in his game he needs to tend to, soon rather than later.
