Phil Hay reacts to Max Wober links as Leeds United transfer news emerges for January

Phil Hay believes the transfer links between Leeds United and Max Wober are “firm and credible” as Jesse Marsch looks to bolster his defensive ranks in the January transfer window.

The Whites have reportedly opened talks with the Red Bull Salzburg defender over a £14million deal, who has previously worked under Marsch at the Austrian club. [Daily Mail]

Following a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League, Leeds remain just two points above the relegation zone and will hope the winter window can provide the impetus needed to steer clear of the drop zone.

Writing for The Athletic, journalist Hay described the current transfer situation between the two parties and explained how Marsch was looking to bring defensive reinforcements to the club in the New Year.

He said: “There are firm and credible links now to Max Wober at RB Salzburg, a 24-year-old who Salzburg use as either a left-sided central defender or a left-back, and events give the impression of stockpiling at play, of Leeds wanting numbers in that particular area beyond the here and now.”

Square pegs in round holes

Are Leeds really going to do this again?

Every Whites fan knows the club need an out-and-out left-back, and Wober just isn’t that. Yes, he can play comfortably in the heart of the defence and may well be a suitable candidate to feature for Leeds in defence, but he isn’t a natural left-back.

This season with the Austrian champions, the defender has fallen out with manager Matthias Jaissle as he was played in an unfavourable full-back position, with Serbian centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic preferred at centre-back. [Peter Linden]

Marsch and Victor Orta may know something we don’t, but it just doesn’t seem like this signing would fix the issue of Pascal Struijk playing in his unfamiliar position on the left flank. What the Whites need in the winter window is a natural left-back who can offer the American a threat down the wing in attack.

Guess this is Groundhog Day once again for Leeds United.
