Leeds United fans mock Kalvin Phillips, Man City star reacts - BBC Sport journalist
Leeds United fans mocked former Elland Road hero Kalvin Phillips as the Whites lost 3-1 against Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday (28 December).
Phillips was in the Man City squad but he didn’t play any part in the game. While he was warming on the sidelines, Leeds fans mocked him, as noted by BBC Sport journalist, Simon Stone.
Pep Guardiola criticized Phillips this week by saying that he was overweight after he returned from the World Cup, and the Whites fans used it as a stick to beat him. Phillips smiled back and the fans applauded him.
Stone wrote on Twitter: “”You’re too fat to play for Leeds,” sing Leeds fans to Kalvin Phillips. He is smiling. They applaud him.”
Phillips left his boyhood club to join Manchester City in the summer transfer window for a big money transfer fee.
The move so far didn’t work out well for him, although he got injured in between.
City have got loads of quality midfielders and Pep Guardiola can afford to send Phillips on loan to get regular games for the rest of the season.
Should Leeds make an effort to sign him on loan in January? The deal makes sense for all parties involved.
The Whites will get a quality midfielder who will add tremendous depth in midfield. Phillips will be welcomed back, and he can get back to his best form under familiar conditions.
Given an option, Phillips probably would find it hard to reject the offer.
At the same time, Marc Roca and Tyler Adams have forged a strong midfield partnership at Elland Road, and Marsch may not be willing to tweak his system to accommodate Phillips if there’s an option.
