Leeds United are not expecting to make any more signings ahead of their Premier League game against Liverpool on Saturday, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist delivered the update on the outlet’s app on Wednesday and made a very intriguing claim at the bottom.
He said, “Bielsa is still a firm admirer of Dan James at Man United”.
Interestingly, in a separate update on The Athletic on Wednesday, it was reported that Man United will have to pay £1m if 22-year-old James makes another appearance for the club.
The clause, agreed when Man United bought James from Swansea for £15m in June 2019, will be triggered when the winger makes 40 appearances.
Appearances are only counted if he starts or comes off the bench for more than 20 minutes.
James is on a reported £45k-a-week at Man United.
Could Leeds go back in for James?
The James transfer debacle will still be painful for Leeds fans. He came very close to signing for Leeds in January 2019 before the deal was pulled at the very last minute on deadline day.
Some fans think that Leeds would have gone on to win promotion in Bielsa’s first season if James had signed.
Leeds were struggling for goals and James would have provided another outlet.
Could Leeds be considering going back in for him?
They want a winger and it’s interesting that Hay has dropped this snippet of information in among transfer talk.
James hasn’t secured a regular first-team spot at Man United and that’s unlikely to change next season.
Would United be prepared to cut their losses and take the £15m they paid for James?
That would be in the Leeds’ budget but would fans be as keen to sign him after watching him struggle in the Premier League?
The last time James started for Man United was in June and he didn’t come off the bench in the last three games of the season.
