Aston Villa fans were left raging after Gareth Southgate left Jack Grealish out of his initial squad for the Nations League games this past week.
And they turned on Leeds fans after Southgate put Kalvin Phillips in the squad, despite having no Premier League experience.
As it turned out, Grealish made the squad too after Marcus Rashford and Harry Winks pulled out.
And both players made their debuts on Tuesday night as England struggled to a 0-0 draw in Denmark.
Phillips started, although he was played out of position. He came off in the 76th minute and was replaced by Grealish.
Phillips posted an image of the starting XI from last night’s game on his Instagram account and Grealish proved there was no animosity towards the Leeds debutant.
He replied to the post saying, “Congrats brother full deserved” and added a couple of ‘hearts’ emojis.
It was a night to remember and a game to forget for both Phillips and Grealish.
Phillips said on his post, “Immensely proud moment for me and my family. As a young kid I dreamt of moments like these and for it to actually happen is unbelievable for me. Congrats to all the boys that made their England debut in the last 10 days.”
That includes Grealish.
We’re not big Grealish fans but even we were begging for him to come on during a game that was one of the low points of Gareth Southgate’s England tenure.
We’re not sure why the manager would want to experiment with such a defensive line-up like this, while playing players like Phillips out of position.
That wouldn’t seem to help anyone and there has been a huge amount of criticism of the players and Southgate since the game.
There was also a massive debate when Phillips was put into the squad despite Southgate previously saying he wouldn’t select anyone playing below the Premier League.
We thought Phillips deserved his call-up and, to be fair to most Villa fans, they didn’t have a problem with Phillips.
They just thought it was hypocritical that Southgate would put him in while ignoring Grealish, especially after the season he had in the Premier League last campaign.
Anyway, all’s well that ends well for both sets of fans – and both players. We look forward to seeing them both in future England squads.
