Phil Hay: Leeds United deal for Brenden Aaronson not dead if Takumi Minamino arrives

Phil Hay has shared that any Leeds United move for Brenden Aaronson is not dead in the water, even if other signings are made in January.

The Athletic journalist has responded to last-gasp links to Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino, who is said to be available for £20million.

RB Salzburg have played hardball over Aaronson this winter, and a Leeds move is still expected in the summer regardless of any other deals.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Hay was quizzed on if any deal for Minamino was set to have a say on Aaronson’s potential arrival.

The fan asked: “If we do go in for Minamino late on Phil, which looks more increasingly with Diaz close to joining Pool, does that make the possibility of signing Brendan Aronson in the summer dead in the water?”

“No, they very much want Aaronson and are prepared to wait,” he wrote.

Not dead.

Aaronson is clearly the number one target at Elland Road.

That doesn’t look set to change, no matter what happens and the American will be odds on to move to Elland Road in the upcoming summer.

Leeds need instant reinforcements, though, and Minamino is someone who can play across the front four if needed – something that will see him used even if Aaronson is signed.

The American would likely play through the middle and the Japanese international could play out wide at Elland Road.

Reinforcements are desperately needed before Monday’s deadline, but it won’t change the long-term plans of Orta – that is for sure.
