Phil Hay: Leeds beat number of clubs to player who starred in 4-0 win v Hull
The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has revealed that Leeds United beat a number of clubs to the signature of forward Tyler Roberts.
Roberts has endured a season littered with injuries so far but shined in a 23-minute cameo in the 4-0 win against Hull City scoring twice at the KCOM Stadium.
The 21-year-old arrived at Elland Road from promotion rivals West Brom back in 2018 for the small figure of only £2.57million [Transfermarkt].
The Welsh international shined against Hull, and it has led to many Leeds fans calling for him to start in the upcoming clash against Huddersfield.
“Roberts is a very talented player,” he shared in an Athletic Q&A after the game.
“There were plenty of clubs in for him when Leeds signed him but injury has interfered with his career here so many times. His anticipation and his finishing today is exactly what you’re looking for. The build-up play to his first was a dream and his header for his second was brilliant.”
On Saturday’s evidence, it is no surprise that many clubs were lining up to bring Roberts into their side. The 21-year-old was everywhere in his 23-minute cameo, and keeping him fit for the final 10 games could give Leeds a secret weapon.
Patrick Bamford worked hard but struggled to find the back of the net once again, and it could be the Welshman who replaces him against Huddersfield.
We doubt that will happen, with Marcelo Bielsa stubborn in his selections. El Loco did heap praise on Roberts though, saying that he hopes the Whites can keep this level of efficiency in front of goal.
