Phil Hay: Kiko Casilla won’t play for Leeds again after loan move

Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has essentially played his final game for the club after sealing his loan exit to Elche.

Phil Hay has reported that the Spaniard’s time is up in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad at Elland Road, now and in the future.

Despite being only a loan to the La Liga club, all parties have the option to make it a permanent switch next summer.

Writing for the Athletic on Monday, Hay insisted that the Whites will likely never see Casilla in another matchday squad.

The former Real Madrid man still has two years left on his current deal at Elland Road, but that doesn’t appear to be a concern.

According to Football Insider, Casilla was on big wages of £30,000-a-week in West Yorkshire, and that is a big chunk to get off the salary bill.

Time to go.

Marcelo Bielsa has tried his best to reintegrate Casilla into the squad and liked by the fans, but even he has now realised some things are impossible.

It was never going to be the same after the Spaniard was found guilty of racially abusing Jonathan Leko two years ago.

Whether you respect him as a player or not, some things just can never be forgiven, and that easily falls into that category.

Victor Orta already has his list of targets ready and will be looking for a new number two behind Illan Meslier.

The young Frenchman will keep his spot for many years to come at the club, and that is something that may affect our search – let’s hope not.
