Phil Hay: Jesse Marsch would offer Leeds United smooth transition from Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United transition from Marcelo Bielsa to Jesse Marsch would be a smooth one, according to Phil Hay.

According to The Athletic journalist, the former Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig manager knows director of football Victor Orta well.

In addition to that, his brand of football is stylistically similar to that of Bielsa, making him an ideal candidate for the job.

Hay wrote, “Marsch, who cut his teeth coaching in the USA, knows Orta well and the American’s tactical methods at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig — possession-based and concentrated on a high press — would potentially make for a smooth transition from Bielsa, avoiding a clunking change of gear.”

Let’s do this

Of all the names mentioned, Marsch clearly seems to be the most exciting of the lot.

The likes of Ernesto Valverde and Carlos Corberan may both have their merits, but they might not play that level of football as Leeds do under Bielsa.

Leipzig are a club that prioritise high pressing and a lot of tactical nuances in the final third.

We’ve seen them employ coaches like Ralf Rangnick and Julien Nagelsmann, who have gone on to manage Europe’s top clubs.

The fact that he’s out of a job and knows Orta well should make things easier for Leeds to get this over the line should Bielsa leave.

It would certainly be the biggest job of his managerial career thus far, but he would stick to Bielsa’s principles and hopefully lure in some more specialist coaches with him at Elland Road.
