Phil Hay issues Leeds United plan for life after Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United are yet to receive an indication about Marcelo Bielsa’s plans beyond the end of the current season, claims Phil Hay.

The Argentine’s deal at the club expires in June this year and the Whites want someone who could stick to his principles should he decide to leave in the summer.

Generally, the club have an idea about his future by February, but things have been different this time around, largely due to their current form.

Speaking about the succession plan on the Athletic Football Podcast, Hay said, “They know the direction they want to go in as and when he leaves which is to say that they don’t want to decimate the plan.

“They’ve got academy groups who play the same way as the first team. They want to bring in a coach who picks out the best aspects of Bielsa’s football and works with them.

“They do keep shortlists of potential coaches as Bielsa is always on a 12-month deal. Previously it was a done deal that they want Bielsa to stay around. But this time around, things are different, the form is different.

“They will also have to wait for them to give some indication of what he plans. A lot could happen over the next few months.”

Clarity needed

While Leeds fans would love Bielsa to stay on beyond the end of the season, they need an answer soon.

Clubs tend to make long-term plans about players and contracts and a lot hinges on the manager’s situation.

With Bielsa, everything is up in the air and it remains hard to gauge what’s going on in his mind.

He needs to communicate his decision in the coming weeks and if he decides to leave, then so be it.

It’s good to know that the club have got a shortlist ready already if and when he decides to leave.

Hopefully, the next manager continues to play a brand of football that excites the Elland Road faithful.
